Virginia Baseball Coaches Association Launches
To Unite, Educate, Support Baseball Coaches in Commonwealth
RICHMOND, Va. (February 1, 2018) – A new network has been established to further the development of baseball coaches – and in turn baseball players – across the Commonwealth.
The Virginia Baseball Coaches Association (VBCA) launches today to unite, educate and support baseball coaches in Virginia. In connecting coaches at all levels, the VBCA envisions providing the tools to improve and enhance the teaching and leadership of amateur baseball players.
“Our goal is simple: We want to create better coaches, better players and better people,” said Tim Merry, founder and executive director of the VBCA and an assistant baseball coach at Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond. “As coaches, we play an influential role in the lives of our players. The VBCA fulfills a fundamental need in Virginia to provide a collaborative network of experienced coaches to share their knowledge and passion for coaching baseball.”
Sean Ryan, president of the board of directors of the VBCA and longtime head baseball coach at Benedictine College Preparatory in Richmond, added: “We want to become the ultimate resource for baseball coaches to continue to learn, which will lead to improving our game across Virginia. The mark of a great coach goes far beyond wins and losses. It’s important that we continue to evolve and learn to make the biggest impact on the players we coach.”
The VBCA is organized as nonprofit association under Virginia law and is in the process of obtaining its charitable designation as a 501(c)(3). The VBCA will begin accepting members today at VABCA.org, and 10 percent of all membership fees will be designated for the VBCA scholarship program for those who otherwise may not be able to participate in camps, clinics, showcases or travel baseball.
An annual convention featuring top college, professional and high school coaches, as well as specialists for training and the mental side of the game, is being planned, as are interactive learning opportunities with some of the state’s college baseball coaches.
“The timing for the VBCA is perfect as baseball in Virginia is as strong as ever,” said Brian O’Connor, a VBCA board member and the head baseball coach at the University of Virginia. “The organization will provide ample opportunities for coaches to learn from each other, not only benefitting the coaches, but also the players, whether they are playing in high school, with a travel team or in college.”
The VBCA has assembled a board of directors that includes current and former college and high school coaches and business professionals, and it is in the process of creating committees of college, high school and travel coaches in regions around the state. The current board of directors includes:
- Tim Merry (Executive Director) – assistant baseball coach at Trinity Episcopal School
- Sean Ryan (President) – head baseball coach at Benedictine College Preparatory
- Billy Wagner (Secretary) – head baseball coach at The Miller School of Albemarle
- Randy Tomlin (Treasurer) – head baseball coach at Liberty Christian Academy
- Brian O’Connor – head baseball coach at the University of Virginia
- Chris Finwood – head baseball coach at Old Dominion University
- Charles “Doc” Adams – former head baseball coach at Lebanon High School
- Mark “Pudge” Gjormand – head baseball coach at James Madison High School
- Kevin King – president of SBK Financial Inc.
- Leslie A.T. Haley – founder and partner at Park Haley LLP
“We’ve been lacking a coaches association dedicated to baseball for some time,” Merry said. “We’re beyond excited with the lineup of coaches and professionals who have committed their time to making our association the best it can be and making our coaches the best they can be.”
